The EMS Department strives to uphold the American Red cross Mission “…to improve
the quality of human life; to enhance self-reliance and concern for others… This is
done through programs of education, prevention and direct service that meet
community needs and are governed and directed by volunteers.” The American Red
Cross of the Twin Cities Area, EMS Department will provide EMT-Basic classes along
with expanded classes at the AIOIC and EMOIC. This EMS Department will provide the
skills and supplies necessary for each student to gain knowledge and experience
needed for this job market. It will prepare each student to take the written National
Registry Exam. EMT Basic class includes the following modules: Blood Borne
Pathogens; Well being of the EMT; Medical, legal and ethical issues; The human
body; Vital signs; SAMPLE history; Lifting and moving patients; Airway management
skills (basic and advanced); Patient assessment skills for both trauma and medical
patients; Communication and documentation; General pharmacology; Emergency
response for: respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, diabetic, and acute abdomen
patients. Allergic reactions and envenomations, substance abuse and poisoning,
environmental, behavior, obstetric and gynecologic patients; Kinematics of trauma,
bleeding, shock, soft tissue injuries, eye injuries, face and throat injuries, chest
injuries, abdomen and genitalia injuries and musculoskeletal care; Bandaging and
splinting skills, head and spine injuries, back boarding skills; Pediatric emergencies
and assessment; Geriatric emergencies and assessment; Ambulance operations;
Gaining access and rescue; Hazardous materials awareness; Weapons of mass
destruction and terrorism awareness; Assisting with cardiac monitoring and IV therapy
Prerequisite: Must have current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional
Rescuer or equivalent AHA certification by the first day of class.
Must be 18 years of age before the date of the Practical Exam.
