Babysitter's Training (r.08) Instructor Course
For those who are not already Red Cross instructors
Prerequisites: Must be 16 years of age by the last day of class and hold current certificate
in Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT). Participants must be able to pass a test of all
Babysitter's Training skills and knowledge at the start of the instructor course.
Length: 12 hours
Course Fee: $100
NOTE: There is prework required for this course. Instructions will be mailed to you upon
registration. If registering less than 10 days prior to the start of the course, you must
receive permission from the course coordinator to ensure adequate time for mailing and
completing the prework.
NEW Babysitter's Training Program Released Summer 2008!
The latest version of the Babysitter's Training Program has been released. This page lists
three types of Babysitter's Training Instructor training:
- For those who are not already Red Cross instructors: Take the Babysitter's
Training Instructor Course (after taking the prerequisite FIT course -- see details
below)
- For those who are already Red Cross CPR instructors: Take the Babysitter's
Training Abbreviated Instructor Course
- For those who are already Red Cross Babysitter's Training Instructors in the
previous Babysitter's Training curriculum: Take the Babysitter's Training (r.08)
Instructor Group Orientation or Babysitter's Training (r.08) Instructor Online Update
All options lead to authorization to teach the newly-revised American Red Cross
Babysitter's Training course to 11 to 15 year olds. Our new Babysitter's Training course
includes content on fundamental leadership skills, the business of babysitting, safety
issues related to babysitting, childhood development and behavior information, the
essentials of basic child care, and caring for first aid emergencies.
Babysitter's Training (r.08) Abbreviated Instructor Course
For those who are already Red Cross CPR instructors
or meet other prerequisites listed below
Prerequisites: One of the following: (1) Current Red Cross instructor authorization to
teach first aid, CPR, or AED (including Lifeguarding); or (2) licensed Registered Nurse
(RN); or (3) school teacher with a teaching certificate; or (4) expired Red Cross
Babysitter's Training instructor authorization expired by less that two years. All
participants must be able to pass a test of all Babysitter's Training skills and knowledge at
the start of the instructor course.
Length: 5 hours
Course Fee: $75

Babysitter's Training (r.08) Instructor Group Orientation
For current instructors in the previous Red Cross Babysitter's Training curriculum
Attend one of these group orientations to become authorized to teach the new
Babysitter's Training curriculum. You'll receive your instructor's manual and all other
required materials, as well as your new instructor certificate, at the group orientation. The
group orientation format allows you to ask questions on the spot and to receive
chapter-specific information. You will complete all aspects of the instructor update during
the orientation session and can begin teaching the new program as soon as you complete
the orientation.
Prerequisite: Current American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Instructor authorization
Length: 3 hours

Babysitter's Training (r.08) Instructor Online Update
For current instructors in the previous Red Cross Babysitter's Training curriculum
This is an alternative to the Group Orientations listed above. Register for this online
update and we will mail you (in a box sent via USPS Priority Mail) your new instructor's
manual, all other required materials, and instructions for completing the online update.
You must complete the online update (allow 2 hours), view parts of the new Babysitter's
Training DVD, and mail us your completed verification form in order to become
authorized. Please allow adequate time for mailing and updating: You must complete the
online update and turn in your verification form by October 31, 2008 in order to continue
teaching without interruption. If you do not update by December 31, 2008, your instructor
authorization will expire, even if you had taught classes in the previous Babysitter's
Training curriculum.
